An Online Therapist in Tennessee's Tips on Preparing for Online Therapy Sessions

You're getting ready to have your first online therapy session, but you're feeling a bit anxious about what it will be like. Will you be able to really focus on your session? Will there be any technology issues? It's all new to you, but there's no need to worry. Everyone has to start somewhere. Even I had my first online session at some point.

Online therapy is a very effective form of therapy, but just like any form of therapy it’s normal to have a few questions at first. That’s why I wrote this blog with my tips on preparing for your online therapy session to help you have a smooth and comfortable experience.

Prepare Your Space for online therapy

First, you want to make sure you're in a quiet and calm space. Ideally, a private space where you feel comfortable talking. However, if you don't have a space with a lot of privacy, you can use a noise machine. This can help to drown out any background noise, along with keeping anyone from overhearing your conversation.

If you're feeling anxious or you get easily distracted, you can have a fidget toy nearby. As a therapist, I understand that sometimes our minds can race. Having something to fidget with can help to calm your mind and help you focus on the conversation.

Having a cup of water or tea available is also a good idea. Staying hydrated is always important, and this way you can take a sip if your throat gets dry while you’re talking. I also encourage you to make sure you're in a comfortable sitting position before getting started. Doing so will ensure that you don't end up feeling uncomfortable at any point, or feeling like you need to move around constantly.

Check Your Technology

Next, you're going to want to make sure that your device has a good internet connection. Charge your laptop or phone beforehand. Or, keep it plugged in during your session. This way you won't have to worry about the battery dying during your session.

Making sure you put your phone on "Do Not Disturb" is also smart. By doing so, you won’t have any notifications coming in and distracting you from your session.

If you’re using a new platform for therapy that you haven’t used before, make sure that your microphone and webcam work. And, that they are also compatible. Sometimes different browsers don't support certain features, so it's important that you check this ahead of time. This way there are no issues when it comes time for your session.

Take a Minute to Relax BEFORE your therapy session

Now that you have gotten comfortable and checked your technology, it's time to take a minute to relax. This is especially important if you're feeling anxious about your session. You can do some deep breathing exercises. Or just something you enjoy that calms you down. This can be reading, listening to music, or journaling about what you want to focus on in your session.

Remember to give yourself this time. This will allow you to destress so you won't feel rushed or overwhelmed when it comes time for your session. It will also ensure that you have space to think about your session and what you want your focus to be on.

Keep in mind that your therapist wants you to have a successful session as much as you do. If you follow these steps, you’ll be prepared to have a comfortable and effective online therapy session.
